Asthma Epidemic: An Overview – Keynote Address
Presented by: Edward Eden, MD
Definition of asthma and underlying anatomic and physiological changes. Host immunity and role of genetics in determining individual susceptibility. Increased asthma prevalence in certain populations. Current theories for increase in asthma rates including environmental impact.

Pathophysiology and Immunology
Presented by: Rauno O. Joks, MD
Immune mechanisms associated with allergic inflammation. Allergic triggers, infectious. Neurologic component. Connection between upper and lower airway inflammation.

Pharmacology of Asthma
Presented by: Victor Cohen, PharmD, BCPS, CMI-V
Asthma definition, etiology and epidemiology. Asthma’s clinical characteristics. Role of short and long acting Beta 2 agonists. Evidence supporting the use of inhaled corticosteroids, leukotriene receptor antagonists and other treatments. Recommended treatment plans for the management of Asthma episodes.

Nutritional Intervention and Food Fallacies in Asthma

Role of certain foods in triggering asthma exacerbation and incorporating information into work. Use of the elimination diet as tool to detect food reactions. Relationship between obesity and asthma. Evidence for and against use of dietary supplements, including fish oils, vitamin C, and probiotics.

New Concepts/Treatment (Mind-Body Connection)

Holistic evaluation of health status, assessment of life circumstances, stresses, dietary routines, life style. Psychosocial factors influencing levels of disease and biology of the disease. The stress cycle and the two parts of the autonomic nervous system. Self-care techniques of meditation, breathing exercises, yogic postures. Chinese medicine/acupuncture.
